Plenty of Rams to play at next level

COVINGTON — Wednesday was a big day for Newton as 11 of the 32 seniors from the 2010 team signed football scholarships.  A trio of Rams will play at the Division I level as linebacker D.J. Hill signed with Virginia, running back Akeem Hunt signed with Purdue and lineman Robert Roquemore is headed to Memphis.

“To have three major Division I signees is extremely big for our program,” Newton head coach Cortez Allen said. “It talks about the type of talent that we’ve had here and the ability of our coaches to develop those kids. Those kids have worked hard, and based on their hard work they’ve reaped the benefits.

“They’re able to live the dream that all kids would like to accomplish one day after they play high school ball. That’s big for our program going forward. It gives confidence in the other people in the community about our program and the kids we have.”

Five Rams signed with Chattahoochee Technical College: running back/defensive back Chris Dickerson, lineman Tarik Dudley, tight end/lineman Jamal Hunte, running back Sammy Merchant and tight end/lineman Cadarius Terrell.

“We worked hard in getting the information out there,” Allen said. “We’ve got a system that’s been set up and we’re just basically getting a lot of information out on the kids; whether it be on the website, getting film out, mailing things out to coaches and getting a lot of coaches involved with our kids, giving them the opportunity to see what we have here.”

Rounding out the impressive senior class were defensive backs Deandre Rashada and Devon Mann, who signed with Alabama State and Morehouse, respectively, and linebacker Cornelius Hudson, a Tusculum signee.
